Bhavatharini, the talented daughter of acclaimed music director Ilaiyaraaja, and a distinguished playback singer, succumbed to cancer on January 25. Battling liver cancer for the past six months, she sought treatment in Sri Lanka, where she ultimately passed away at approximately 5 pm. The 47-year-old singer’s mortal remains are scheduled to be transported to Chennai on January 26, where her final rites will be conducted. She leaves behind her grieving husband.

A Musical Legacy: Bhavatharini’s Journey in the Industry

Bhavatharini, part of the illustrious Ilaiyaraaja family, marked her presence as a playback singer and music composer. Notably, she clinched the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the Tamil track ‘Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu’ from the movie ‘Bharathi.’

Initiating her singing career with ‘Raasaiya,’ Bhavatharini lent her melodious voice to compositions for her father Ilaiyaraaja, as well as her brothers, Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja. Her vocal prowess extended beyond familial collaborations, encompassing works with composers Deva and Sirpy.

In a notable shift, Bhavatharini ventured into music composition with the Revathy-directed ‘Mitr, My Friend’ in 2002. She continued to showcase her musical talent by composing for films like ‘Phir Milenge’ and contributing to the soundtrack of the Malayalam film ‘Maayanadhi,’ marking her last music album.

The untimely demise of Bhavatharini has left the music industry and her countless fans mourning the loss of a remarkable talent.
